Somebody Stole my Gal Axel's Dreamband 1977

Jazz in Hamburg
Somewhere on my original video it said Axel's Dreamband from Austria, but I hear these guys talk about a jazz club in Hamburg and this was recorded ( it says) in 1977.
Who is this excellent clarinetplayer and not to forget the stride pianist.
Darn good jam from Hamburg!

I particularily like the sop sax player's approach. I don't know who the are.

Charmaine Mason Rod 1987

Rod Mason's Hot Five on German TV in 1987. Rod uses excellent German musicians. The only other Brit is Ray Smith on piano, who for many years was the pianist of Ken Colyer's Jazzmen
A number of weeks ago my new youtube friend and banjoist Englishman Sean Moyes told me he lives Germany and is a member of Rod Mason's Hot Five.
It is for that reason I post another few tunes of Rod's excellent band. To think that this was recorded almost 20 years ago.
When I met Rod in 1983 he was a member of the Dutch Swing College Band. The band came to Canada and we did a concert night with the two bands, the DSC and our Climax Jazz Band. I remember the tremendous fun we had when Rod came to sit in with our band.
"Heh Sean, it's your turn now to post a few clips of the 2006 Rod Mason Hot Five!"
By the way Sean has just started the jazz video library.
Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/group/jazzvideolibrary
At this time there more than 500 jazz videos on that site.

Seven minutes of Barbara Dennerlein

Barbara Dennerlein, the German Hammond organ jazz virtuosa, is playing here a tune with her trio. Most of het tunes last 10-15 minutes. I choose about 7 minutes of Barbara's skills. The saxophonist is Rick Keller.
At age 11, Dennerlein began playing electronic organ . After starting organ lessons, she learned to play the two manual organ with a bass pedalboard. After one and a half years of lessons she continued to study without formal instruction. At age 15, she played in a jazz club for the first time. When leading her own bands, Dennerlein was often the youngest musician in the group, and she learned to cooperate with more experienced musicians. Her local reputation as the "Organ tornado from Munich" spread after her first TV appearances in 1982.

Dippermouth Blues Allotria JB 1985

In the eighties Munich's Allotria Jazz Band always has been one of the most popular jazz bands at the Sacramento annual jubilee. I went through a video of many bands at the 1985 jubilee and unfortunately I found most of the filmed bands very disappointing. Loud, technical, fast, trying just to please the crowd for whatever sake, which usually was the musical content and I decided to use nothing for youtube purposes.
Then I came across this clip of the Allotria and became intrigued again.
Here they are playing the Dippermouth Blues. Rainer Sander, the clarinet and sax player is their leader and a medical doctor by profession. I have seen the band several times in Sacramento and was always impressed by the trombone player, a beer brew master by the name of Fritz Stewens. Pit Mueller is the trumpet player with the tropical helmet and I remember seeing their drummer Gregor Beck.
Interesting that in this clip obviously Gregor had a substitute. No other than Charlie Antolini, one of Europe's most famous drummers.

St Philip's Street Breakdown Mason Rod 1987

For a German TV jazz broadcast in 1987 we see the clarinettist of Rod Mason's Hot Five playing the George Lewis classic St. Philip Street Breakdown. Engelbert Wrobel doesn't copy the George Lewis version much, he sets his own style end does some interesting stuff together with the sousaphone player.
For this concert Rod Mason had one of Britain's best stride pianists with him. Too bad that Ray Smith didn't play a solo.

Ma he's making eyes at me Mason Rod 1987

During a broadcast for German TV in 1987 British cornetplayer Rod Mason and his Hot Five playing and singing a vaudeville tune. After the vocals there is a banjosolo. The German banjoplayer has a beautiful sounding instrument with an almost metallic sound. It amazes me how Rod Mason always seem to challenge himself in his solowork and it feels that he is not going to make it, but he always manages to get out of it. Maybe just for this concert Rod had one of the finer stride pianists in the band. Here is Ray Smith who played for years with Ken Colyer.
Rod played for years with the Acker Bilk band and in the late seventies joined the Dutch Swing College Band. With them he came to Canada in 1983 and they were the guests of our Climax Jazz Band during a concert. We all became good friends with Rod.
Shortly after Rod moved to Germany and started his Hot Five and today in 2007 he is still gigging around. Good for you dear Rod!
